Brief Analysis of The Works of Edgar Allan Poe - 1271 Words

Readers get an education when it comes to the role that the first-person narrator takes on some of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories. In â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart† (1843) the unnamed narrator is not trying to convince the reader that he is not guilty, just that he is not crazy. He was justified in killing the old man with the â€Å"vulture-like eye† and hiding the body under the floorboards of his home. He may be trying to save his own skin, but that is not the point. The crime is not in question; it is the narrator’s sanity. How can one trust the storyteller, if you only get one part of the story? This is what makes the journey as a reader more interesting. How do you discern the truth? This is what it is like going through Poe’s work. Most of†¦show more content†¦It is not until the end of the story when a servant shrieks in terror as he sees Egaeus and points at his master’s clothing â€Å"muddy and clotted with gore† and â€Å"indented with human nails.† There were some objects by the wall—a spade and a box inside â€Å"some instruments of dental surgery, intermingled with thirty-two small, white, and ivory-looking substances that were scattered to and fro about the floor.† Berenice was alive and Egaeus obsession made a bad thing even worse. He is in denial as to what he did that he identified Berenice’s teeth as â€Å"ivory-looking substances.† He turns something ugly into a beautiful thing as he describes what he sees. Egaeus does not want to believe that he did what he did. Just on that element alone, his story needs to be questioned. However in fiction things do not tend to be so straightforward and there are other elements that need to be taken into consideration. Things may not be as it seems. Among Poe’s short stories there are two that hint about the supernatural or the unexplained, but it is all left to the reader as to make his or her own interpretation of the story. Morella—A Tale of Obsession â€Å"Morella† involves a married couple who dabble in witchcraft and the Dark Arts. The husband is the storyteller. Morella, who is about to die while giving birth to their daughter, tells her unloved husband that she is never going to leave him. He may show love to his child, but she it may be shortlived. In recent years, while the term gender has been a controversial issue for debate, one of the methods of the gender classification by society is through the concept of gender being biologically determined. This essay explores gender in a clearer perception of the philosophy and professional objectives to develop a foundation for deeper analytical studies. The assumptions made that gender is biologically determined is rebutted when applied to the case of intersexuality and transgender. The Functions of staff Executive – This team supports company wide operations at Subway’s headquarters. This role includes customer care and the business process eam. Administrative – The administrative team is responsible for employee management and grounds and shipping centre oversight. Franchise Brands – This team offers a diversified portfolio of new and promising ideas that will improve the Subway experience for franchises and customers. Development – This is the team th at works very close to the people who want to open their very own Subway restaurant. Part of the job is to help with real estate planning and recruiting new franchisees. Operations – This is the team that enforces and provides training and operational assistance to franchisees and field staff. Technology – This is the team who are responsible for implementing and maintaining all technology systems that are in the company and provide technology initiatives so franchisees can operate their business more efficiently. Marketing – This is the team who present the public face for Subway. These teams departments include research and development, which develop and test markets the food that Subway serve and the franchising advertising fund are responsible for the creation and placement of commercials and print ads. The team leader must also be responsible for serving customers, following health and safety procedures and keeping the store clean. They also must train in new sandwich artists. Sandwich Artists – The sandwich artists are the face of the shop. These are the people you will see the most when you walk into a Subway restaurant. Thus to foster creativity among employees and to retain them, the management of Samsung allows them to maintain a healthy work-life balance. The organization also provides a vacation for the self-management of employees. In order to increase the satisfaction level among employees, Samsung cares about the health of the employees and organizes welfare programs to secure the post-retirement life of the employees(Samsung, 2017).Corporate pension program, medical subsidies, employment insurance and compensation insurance are some of the welfare measures that Samsung has implemented for the employees. However, it has been found that recently employees of Samsung have worked for more than 16 hours each day in the Chinese manufacturing firm with one day off every month. Employees who were below 16 years of age were also hired. Also the explosion of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 due to overheating of faulty batteries was an unethical practice of Samsung that led to customer harassment and the organization had to recall 2 million devices and discontinue the product. Also recently the heir of Samsung, Jay Y lee was jailed for 5 years in a bribery case (ethical issues of Samsung, 2017). Qualitative Analysis The plans of the managers of Samsung involve innovation in process, products and personnel. The managers of the organization involved in strategic plans by focusing on product innovation. The product lines of Samsung that do not produce desired rate of return for the organization are pruned , for instance products like juicers and electronic pagers of the organization was replaced with hi-tech goods of high-margin like mobile phones and music players. The focus of Samsung on higher-end products also helped Samsung to increase the brand value of the Company. Samsung also adopted the concept of Just-In-Time technology to reduce inventory level and the concept of make-to-order production in Samsung also helped Samsung in process innovation (SEYEDI PAKNEZHAD, 2015). However the flaws in manufacturing and battery design caused explosion of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 for which the organization had to recall 2 million devices in 2016 which has cost the company 5.3 billion dollar. In manufacturi ng firms of Samsung, young workers were hired for overtime work to cut cost and maximize profit. Also, Lee Jae-yong was provided offered $ 38 million bribes to gain support of President Park Geun-hye of South Korea. This briery was given to get help of government related to a merger that would strengthen control of Lee over Samsung at a crucial time (ethical issues of Samsung, 2017). Conclusion The management system in Samsung is open and the managers of the organization appreciate suggestions and ideas from employees. The knowledge management system of Samsung helps employees to share knowledge and expertise. Ethical practices of Samsung ensure compliance with law, respect for all stakeholders including customers and employees. However Samsung should avoid ethical controversies like unethical labor practices in manufacturing firms in China, explosion of devices like Galaxy Note 7 phone and the bribery case of Jay Y lee which can tarnish reputation of the organization.
